The earliest reference to Black Friday applied to the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. Originating in Philadelphia after the Police described the disruptive shopping behaviour that occurred on the day after Thanksgiving which is on the fourth Thursday of November. Also known as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S. since the 1950’s. Although the term ‘Black Friday’ was not widely used until recent decades.
A more popular explanation used for the phrase is that it is when retailers start to make a profit. Therefore, going from being “in the black”. It was common place for retailers to open their stores earlier and earlier. 2006 saw the first reports of shoppers becoming violent in their attempts to acquire a sought after bargain. Even resulting in deaths !
By the 2010’s some retailers in the U.K. with connections to American companies began Black Friday promotions, based on the American concept. By 2014 more British retailers began to follow suit. Companies included Argos, John Lewis and Very. That year Police were called upon to deal with the many incidents of crowd control, traffic problems and violent customers. In 2017 retails sales in the U.K. took over December for the first time.
More than ever now, especially due to the current climate of the Pandemic, on-line shopping traffic is higher than it has ever been. Lock-downs, due to COVID-19 have accelerate on-line shopping trends by around five years.
Cyber Monday is a term that was invented by the National Retail Federation in 2005. It refers to the Monday following Black Friday. In 2003/04 it was noted that consumers were busy with Thanksgiving and preferred to shop on-line the following Monday. This trend grew in popularity, hitting an all time high by 2013 of $1.73 billion . 2014 saw Cyber Monday become the busiest shopping day of the year. On-line sales exceeded $2 billion.
Both Black Friday and Cyber Monday are part of Cyber-week. Which is now more like Cyber-month ! Having launched even earlier to entice shoppers, this November is on track to be record breaking for on-line retail.
