International Women’s Day is used to celebrate the movement for Women’s rights on the 8th March. Originally, the Socialist Party of America organised Women’s Day in New York City in 1909. The International Socialist Women’s Conference declared that from 1910 that this would be an annual event on this date.

It was adopted by the feminist movement around 1967 and the United Nations began celebrating the day in 1975. It is intended to be a day to celebrate Womanhood and in some countries, it is a public holiday.

In London there was a march from Bow to Trafalgar Square in support of Women’s Suffrage on the 8th March 1914. Activist Sylvia Pankhurst was arrested on her way to speak at the event.

In the 21st century in the west, the day was increasingly sponsored by major corporations and used to promote feel-good messages rather than radical social reforms. The UN theme for International Women’s Day in 2019 was: ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change’.

In short this event is about empowering women at all levels, because WOMEN YOU ROCK!
